Meet Bee - one half of our very nervous little Bumble Bee duo! Bee arrived at Adana with his sister Bumble when they were only around nine weeks old. They were absolutely petrified, and somehow managed to squeeze themselves into the tiniest space they could find in our clinic area, where they could watch the world from a safe distance without actually having to take part in it.
Bee is a gorgeous little chap, with the most beautiful rich chocolate colouring, expressive olive-green eyes and those wonderfully distinctive Podenco "bat" ears. And those ears are always on duty! He is constantly listening, watching and trying to work out what all the comings and goings are about. He’s fascinated by everything around him, but still not entirely convinced that he wants to get involved just yet.
Now Bumble has been adopted, Bee no longer has his sister to hide behind when things all get a bit much. It’s a big adjustment for him, but slowly and tentatively he is beginning to realise that all these people fussing around him are actually here because they rather like him. Staff, volunteers and visitors simply can’t resist him, and every little bit of trust he gives us feels like a real privilege.
But Bee is still so young, and we have a feeling that there is a whole lot more personality waiting to burst out. We’ve seen it happen so many times with our nervous Pods - first comes the cautious watching, then a little confidence creeps in, followed by a bit of puppy bravado… and before you know it, the real character starts to emerge! We suspect Bee may have a few surprises in store for us yet.
Podencos, or “Pods” as we call them, can be sensitive little souls, especially when they haven’t had the best start in life. They often need a little time and patience to work out that people can be trusted. But they are also funny, affectionate, curious and wonderfully quirky dogs, and once they find their confidence, they can really blossom.
Bee is going to need someone who understands that he may not be the puppy who rushes over to greet you on day one. He needs time, kindness and plenty of reassurance - and, of course, all the usual puppy stuff too! Training, exploring, learning, playing and discovering that the world is actually a pretty exciting place.
Come and meet our little Bee. Sit with him, talk to him, give him a cuddle if he’s ready, and let him take things at his own pace. Somewhere underneath those enormous ears and slightly worried eyes is a little Pod waiting to discover just how much fun being a puppy can be.
