Meet Tristan

Tristan is one of four tiny Podenco puppies who arrived at the shelter after being found abandoned in a bin, at about 8 weeks old. We have no words that we can write here that adequately describe how heartbreaking that is, but sadly it is a situation that far too many of our puppies have been rescued from.

Despite such a difficult start, Tristan is exactly what a puppy should be – curious, playful, and ready to discover the world around him. We're still getting to know his personality, but every day he grows a little more confident, a little more adventurous, and a little more determined to investigate absolutely everything. Like most puppies, he's equally happy chewing toys, tumbling around with his siblings, or collapsing into a sleepy puppy pile after all the excitement.

Many people are surprised to learn just how many Podencos and Podenco puppies end up in shelters across Spain. Traditionally bred as hunting dogs, thousands are abandoned or surrendered every year when they are no longer wanted. Yet those who know the breed understand what wonderful companions they can be. Podencos are intelligent, affectionate, loyal dogs who form strong bonds with their families. As puppies, they are bright, energetic little learners who thrive with positive training, patience, and plenty of love.
